Inspiration Behind Perfidious
Warning: Hints of Perfidious and Deceptions.
As I grew up writing stories, everyone asked me where all of my ideas came from. My favorite sarcastic answer was either my head or that I just made things up. In reality, ideas for stories or scenes can come from the smallest thing.
For Perfidious, I started with the idea that I didn’t want the story to be written through the point of view that everyone gets: the main hero. I wanted it to be from the view of someone that is really important that would support this hero character while he went through his journey. This seemed like such an interesting concept to me that I could show scenes or background behind this main hero becoming who he was meant to be. So I decided who my character would be from that and how her role would be important.
At the same time of coming up with his idea of a point of view, I also wanted to write a story about monsters. Not like vampires and werewolves. I had felt that those were very overdone after Twilight. I wanted creatures and monsters of folklore. Things that could exist in the shadows of the past. I made my main character half elf that way she could look human, leaving many options open for my still developing storyline.
Next came a dream. I dreamt about a girl who was a warrior in the King’s army. There wasn’t much more than snippets of battle scenes and one thing stuck out. The King was in love with her and didn’t want her to risk her life for him. I didn’t want to use this exact scene but I liked the dynamic it gave between my main character and the hero character.
Then I was stuck. I didn’t know how to bring all three elements together. They were there, but it felt like something was missing. My sister came up to me one day, completely out of nowhere, and decided to tell me “You should write a book about people who have a mark or a tattoo that means something.” After she said that, everything clicked into my head. I started writing Perfidious that night.
Now, Perfidious had many many different storylines in the beginning.
At one point, there was a huge prophecy that spoke of key characters that would overtake Perfidious, but that ended up getting too complicated. I replaced this idea with King Lawrence’s bloodline and Greyson being his descendent.
Elisia was originally a thief that stole useless trinkets to get her father’s attention.
And probably the biggest thing was that Kalvin wasn’t even in the story to begin with. It was only after I realized I needed to give her more ties to Perfidious that I decided on who her best friend would be.
